Worth a visit

Tavira is a treasure trove of historical and architectural gems, making it a must-visit destination in the Algarve. One of the town's most iconic landmarks is the Roman Bridge (Ponte Romana), which spans the Gilão River. Offering picturesque views of the town, this bridge, despite its name, dates back to the 17th century and remains a significant historical site.

In the heart of Tavira lies the medieval Tavira Castle (Castelo de Tavira), where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the town and its surroundings. The castle's gardens provide a peaceful retreat and a chance to delve into Tavira's storied past.

The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, built on the site of a former mosque, stands out with its Gothic architecture. This historic church is also the resting place of the knights who conquered Tavira from the Moors, adding to its historical importance.

Another must-see is the Igreja da Misericórdia, a Renaissance-style church renowned for its stunning azulejos, or blue and white ceramic tiles, depicting scenes from the Bible and the life of Christ. This church is a prime example of Portuguese tile work and a testament to the town’s rich artistic heritage.

A beach worth going to to see the large anchors lying on the beach and of course soak up some sun.

On Praia do Barril you can see the remains of the former tuna fishing village. There are more than 100 rusting anchors in the sand, arranged in rows.

Cozy train ride from the mainland out to he beach. You can also choose to walk (but it’s a long distance)

Quatro Aguas is a short and delightful car trip from Casa Miramar through the salt dunes in Tavira. Here you can spot the flamingos, and if you’re lucky, you get to watch them up close.

Combine the safari with a beach day at Ilha de Tavira. Park your car in the ending parkinglot (bring som euros in cash for parking payment) and take the ferry out to the beaches of Tavira.

Lagos in the Algarve is a charming destination blending rich history, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. Note! The beaches and caves in Lagos can be very crowded. We recommend to visit Lagos in the early hours, or later in the evening.
